How to find Your Targeted customers?

It is all over the internet, all the marketing Gurus blogged about it. To be successful on your business, you need to find your targeted customers.
Who is your customers, when you sell online only, any way?
To tell you frankly, I don't know.
I know the fact that, people buy online are not afraid of doing it. They love to surf on the web and find out what is there on a bargain.
But, in reality, if you are selling on Etsy, you may not know the gender, age, income and background of your buyer. Sometimes, you may know the buyer, because, they just happened to be in the same LinkedIn group, or just another Etsy seller in your team.
Some people are scared to buy online, because they think, their credit card information is going to be stolen  The media is increasing their fear. They don't even do banking online. They are not your customers for sure.
The people, who love technology, who have the courage to do online purchases, the ones brave to look online bargains...They are  your targeted customers. They will sure have a Facebook account. They must love to tweet. What else they will do??? I am thinking, they are of the younger generation , I mean they are probably less than 50 years of age.
Just my thoughts. I haven't came across an article suggesting how to determine the targeted customers.
